Companies are being given the chance to prove they pay their way thanks to a new accreditation system devised in Bath.
FairTax UK has been launched by University of Bath student Luke Tregidgo and will allow businesses to demonstrate to customers that they have paid a fair amount of tax.
Mr Tregidgo, who has just completed a PhD in aerodynamics at the university, has launched the organisation with the help of national accountancy firm Deloitte.
He said: "In the wake of all the Starbucks and Amazon tax scandals I thought it was time to stop talking about all the negatives and who's not paying tax – let's recognise and celebrate who is paying."
Working with Deloitte Mr Tregidgo has put together a criteria for businesses to judge whether or not they are paying a fair amount of tax. If a company matches the criteria they will be allowed to use the FairTax UK logo on publicity, website and products.
Mr Tregidgo, who also works as an enterprise event manager at the campus, said: "It's a difficult question what is a fair or moral amount of tax? And a company that is making a loss can legitimately pay no tax.
"Hopefully this will get businesses thinking about their approach to tax."
