A memorial will be held in the city for former Bath man Albert Kane, who died in a tragic quarry accident last week.

Mr Kane, 59, from Coleraine, Northern Ireland, was fatally injured by a digger bucket which fell from a quarry machine on August 23.

The father-of-two had called to deliver a message to a friend, who was at work on his own in the quarry, when the accident happened.

He was born in Londonderry, but moved to Bath in 1987, where he got a job in the maintenance department of Jolly's.

Later he left Jolly's to set up an independent property maintenance company before joining The Bath Press as a maintenance man.

Mr Kane married his wife Lulu at St Thomas a Becket Church, Widcombe, in 1988 and later they had two children, Molly and Iona.

Whilst in Bath the family lived in Henrietta Street and Hatfield Gardens, in Widcombe, and then Horsecombe Grove, in Coombe Down.

They moved to Coleraine in 2005, but would come back to Bath several times a year to visit Lulu's family.

Mr Kane was a great supporter of Bath Rugby and always tried to attend home games when they were back in the city.

Close friend John Blake said: "Albert was a slightly larger than life character, with a big booming Irish voice, that could be heard right across a Bath pub packed with rugby supporters before a game.

"He was incredibly generous of his time and would offer practical support to anyone that needed it, whether it was laying a patio or minding the children.

"For those of us nearing retirement, he was just the sort of person you would like to have living next door. Ironically he was killed helping his best friend out on a Saturday morning in a quarry in Northern Ireland."

Mr Kane will also be missed by those in Coleraine, where he was a caretaker for Coleraine High School.

His memorial service will be held at St Thomas a Becket in late October.
