Michael Jamieson could not hide his disappointment after seeing his dream of winning Commonwealth Games gold in the Glasgow pool where he first started swimming dashed by fellow Scot Ross Murdoch.
Jamieson - the poster boy of Glasgow 2014 - was one-hundredth of a second inside world-record pace at the halfway stage of a high-quality 200m breaststroke final on Thursday.
However, he had fallen behind Murdoch at the 150m turn and could not peg him back in the closing straight, having to settle for silver in 2mins 8.40secs.
To add insult to injury, Murdoch's winning time of 2:07.30 broke the British record previously held by Olympic silver-medalist Jamieson.
England's Andrew Willis - who trains alongside Jamieson at the University of Bath - was a fine third in 2:09.87.
After the race, a clearly downbeat Jamieson told the BBC: " I don't prepare to come second all the time, it's not good enough.
"Ross has been in great form all season and he has dropped huge chunks off his best so he deserves to win."
Willis added: "I gave that my all. It was a good race, good fun. It was not quite the time I wanted but I'm on the podium so I'm heading in the right direction."
