Bath swimming star Siobhan-Marie O'Connor was thrilled to end a busy opening day of Commonwealth Games action with two silver medals and a place in another final on Friday night.

The 18-year-old pushed Emma McKeon all the way and forced the Australian to swim a new Commonwealth record time of 1min 55.57secs to take the 200m freestyle title in an emotionally-charged Tollcross Swimming Centre, still buzzing after Scottish swimmer Hannah Miley's gold-medal success in the 400m individual medley.

O'Connor picked her up a medal and was back in the pool moments later, setting the fastest qualification time of 57.57 in the 100m butterfly semi-finals.

And she wrapped up a hectic day - which began with two heat swims in the morning - by setting England on their way to silver medals in the 4x100m freestyle relay, with their time of 3:35.72 only beaten by Australia's new world record of 3:30.98.

"It's been a pretty busy evening but I'm really happy with how it went," O'Connor told the BBC.

"The first day was massively important for me - I knew it was going to be a busy one so I'm just glad it went well."

Former St Gregory's Catholic College and Ralph Allen pupil O'Connor touched the wall in 1:55.82 in the 200m freestyle - slicing seven-tenths off her lifetime best - to claim her first major medal at a multi-sport championship.

And her performance impressed double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington, who was watching as part of the BBC's summarising team in Glasgow.

"Siobhan put up a great fight and it bodes well for what she has left for the rest of the week," said Adlington, who won two gold medals at Beijing 2008.

"She knows she's swimming well, that will give her confidence. She's had a great learning curve, now it's her time to shine.

"She has amazing mental strength - she's used to training at the top of her level in Bath, they are so focussed down there on what they want to achieve."

Fellow Bath teenager Amelia Maughan helped England qualify for the 4x100m freestyle relay final by swimming the anchor leg in the afternoon's heats.

University of Bath swimmer Tilly Gray - also making her major championship debut - was seventh behind O'Connor in her 100m butterfly semi-final in 1:00.66.

Jemma Lowe of Wales, who trains alongside O'Connor in Bath, booked her place in Friday's final by finishing third in semi-final one in 58.47.

Chris Walker-Hebborn, another British Gas NTC Bath swimmer, will also be going for gold on Friday after easing through the 100m backstroke semi-finals, finishing third in his semi-final with plenty to spare in 53.57 having set a new Commonwealth record in Thursday afternoon's heats.
