People living and working in Bath are being urged to check their fire safety measures ahead of a national firefighter strike.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service's chief fire officer has issued a safety reminder, warning residents to be vigilant and make efforts to help reduce the risk of fire.

Kevin Pearson said: "Although we have resilience plans in place during the strike, they are not a direct replacement for the service we normally provide.

"I would urge everyone to make every effort to reduce the risk of a fire starting in their homes or businesses as we may take longer to reach you.

"Simple things like ensuring you do not leave cooking unattended, making sure you check your smoke alarms are working and rehearsing fire escape route with your family will certainly help you stay safer.

"Business owners and managers should also check their own fire risk assessments."

The Fire Brigades' Union will strike on Thursday, July 10, from 10am until 7pm in an on-going dispute with the government over pensions.

During this time a skeleton service will be in operation from six locations across the Avon Fire and Rescue Service area, where fire cover will be provided by firefighters who are not part of the union as well as auxiliary firefighters who will provide support to the fully qualified crews.

Due to the reduced emergency services the public are advised to expect a longer response time, as calls will be prioritised towards those where there is a risk to life.
