World Cup 2014: Netherlands striker Robin van Persie makes case for Mexico defence

Robin van Persie says Mexico's defence will prove a formidable obstacle to the Netherlands' hopes of a World Cup quarter-final spot when the sides meet in Fortaleza on Sunday.

The Manchester United striker had three goals to his name already and is poised to return to the Dutch starting line-up following suspension.

Goalscoring super-sub Leroy Fer misses out with hamstring trouble while defender Bruno Martins Indi faces a race against time to recover from the concussion he sustained against Australia.

Van Persie said: "It's now a knockout. They played really well and remained unbeaten in their group.

"Even the hosts could not score against them. That speaks volumes about their abilities.

"Moreover, they will be playing in familiar conditions – we have to be more alert and best-prepared to face all sorts of situations.

"There is absolutely no scope for errors. We have to minimise our errors and try our best to capitalise on the errors of our opponents.

"We are not thinking far at this point of time - we just want to concentrate on the match at hand and give our best."

Mexico qualified in second place in Group A with seven points and face no new injury problems although van Persie's Old Trafford teammate Javier Hernandez, who came off the bench to score against Croatia, will be pushing for a starting berth.

Their number one, Guillermo Ochoa, has arguably been the most impressive goalkeeper at the World Cup, pulling off a string of memorable saves against hosts Brazil.

Ochoa has been beaten just once so far in the tournament – a consolation strike from Croatian midfielder Ivan Perisic – but he is quick to credit the defenders in front of him for Mexico's stinginess.

"I think the defensive line has been shown to be key," said Ochoa.

"In such a short tournament it is so important and essential to help you earn points, and to make a difference we must continue on a single line.

"The team has been playing well, has grown and hopefully in the next game will continue to grow.

"It's a tough opponent, it will not be easy but we will give a good fight in all sectors and we will have to be very attentive and focused.

"We've seen in the games they've played that they have versatile, strong players that make a big difference but we can also play and we have our strengths."
