Greece manager Fernando Santos will not be underestimating surprise package Costa Rica in Sunday's second-round clash.

The Portuguese has guided Greece to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in their history thanks to a late penalty from Georgios Samaras against Ivory Coast.

That goal sealed a 2-1 win – Greece's first success of the tournament – and Santos was delighted to have brought some hope into Hellenic life.

"I am delighted first of all that we bring joy to the Greek people," said the manager. Next up is a tie against an impressive Costa Rica side that were responsible for sending three former World Cup holders – England, Uruguay and Italy - home.

And, while the world scoffs at Greece's defensive nature, Santos believes his side have shown that they can be dangerous going forward.

"I can but laugh as it is a joke. In football one attacks and one defends. We know how to defend well and we are very good on the counter-attack," he said.

"We have time to think about the match with Costa Rica. We will go back to our base, think about it and study our opponents.

"We have to pay a lot of attention to this game, they came out top in the 'Group of Death'. As a result we cannot allow ourselves to underestimate them."

Greece's qualification caught many by surprise with Ivory Coast and Japan both thought of as stronger candidates for progression.

Among those caught off guard by the Greeks are their forthcoming opponents and Costa Rica midfielder Yeltsin Tejeda admitted they had not thought about Santos' side as possible opponents.

"We were thinking more about Colombia and the Ivory Coast and in the end came the least expected team. Now we have to change the video cassette," said the 22-year-old midfielder.

"They are in the World Cup and they beat an excellent team, Ivory Coast. "If they are there [in the Round of 16], it is because they were better."
