World Cup 2014: We can beat Colombia without Luis Suarez, says Uruguay defender Diego Godin

Diego Godin says Uruguay can overcome Columbia in Saturday's last-16 clash despite the absence of suspended striker Luis Suarez.

Godin scored the goal that took Uruguay through in a 1-0 Group D win over Italy but the game was overshadowed by Suarez's bite on Giorgio Chiellini.

Suarez faces a nine-game suspension for Uruguay, meaning his World Cup has come to a premature end, as well as a blanket ban which takes into account domestic action in the Premier League.

"We can start thinking about the last 16, but no further," said Godin.

"We respect everyone but fear no one.

"The Italy game is one of those games that defines an era. It was a dream match for us and it's made the whole country very happy."

Little over a month after silencing Barcelona at the Nou Camp with the goal that won the Spanish league title for Atletico, Godin admits he's enjoying his purple patch.

"Luckily I've been able to score some big goals this year," he added.

"But I always say that you do your best for the team and that team supports you in what you do. The work-rate at both Atletico and here is amazing."

Colombia have been missing their own star striker at this World Cup in Radamel Falcao, after he failed to overcome a knee injury. In his place, though, James Rodriguez has starred with three goals in a faultless Group C campaign for the Colombians.

And Jackson Martinez claims the Monaco playmaker is improving with every game.

"It's impressive to see how James has improved," Martinez said. "I knew him from FC Porto and I see that now in France he has matured so much.

"The talent he has is something that cannot be questioned. He is having a great tournament." Colombia coach Jose Pekerman rested many of his starters in their final group game against Japan with Rodriguez, Mario Yepes and Carlos Carbonero all in line for a return at the weekend.

Suarez's absence could mean a recall for former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan but Yepes insists it doesn't matter who they face.

"We are thinking only of our work," he said.

"It is going to be a difficult match, very difficult, because we have had the opportunity of watching Uruguay's matches during the World Cup, and we have seen it is a difficult team to play."
