Giorgio Chiellini and Diego Maradona have labelled the punishment meted out to Luis Suarez for his World Cup bite as "excessive".

The Uruguay striker's offence against Chiellini during his side's Group D victory in Natal saw him banned for four months from all football. He will also miss his country's next nine matches.

However, Juventus defender Chiellini admits he sympathises with the 27-year-old, who has now missed an astonishing 47 games through suspensions since 2010.

"Inside me there's no feelings of joy, revenge or anger against Suarez for an incident that happened on the pitch and that's done," said Chiellini.

"There only remain the anger and the disappointment about the match.

"I have always considered unequivocal the disciplinary interventions by the competent bodies, but at the same time I believe that the proposed formula is excessive.

"I sincerely hope that he will be allowed, at least, to stay close to his team-mates during the games because such a ban is really alienating for a player."

Liverpool are thought to be weighing up their legal options before making their next move, with the striker set to miss nine Premier League games and three Champions League clashes if the ban is upheld.

But Suarez has also been backed by Argentina hero Diego Maradona, who likened his treatment by Fifa to that of a prisoner.

"The Fifa sanction is shameful, they have no sensitivity towards the fans, they might as well handcuff him and throw him in Guantanamo," said Maradona, who was handed a 15-month ban from football during the 1994 World Cup for testing positive for the banned stimulant Ephedrine.

"It hurts that they have cut short the career of a lad who is a winner. It's an excessive suspension, Fifa cannot talk about morals to anyone."
