Bath celebrates St George's Day

St George's Day has been celebrated early in Bath. The Widcombe Mummers and Northwest Morris dancers Mr Wilkins Shilling performed for more than hour at locations around the city centre on Saturday to commemorate the patron saint of England - complete with a dragon. The two groups performed a version of the St George story as well as a number of traditional dances to entertain tourists and locals. The event started in Kingston Parade and moved around the city centre before finishing outside Bath Abbey where a large crowd gathered to watch St George slay the dragon. The performers were greeted at the Abbey by Mayor of Bath Councillor Malcolm Lees and the vice chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council Councillor Martin Veal. Councillor Ian Gilchrist (Lib Dem, Widcombe) started The Widcombe Mummers eight years ago. He said it was important to mark St George's Day. "It was all done for a bit of fun and we traditionally perform on New Year's Day in Widcombe but we started doing St George's Day performances five years ago. "It's becoming a bit of a tradition and it gives a lot of people a lot of pleasure, especially on a Saturday when Bath Rugby are in town."
