Midford Road near Bath may continue to be closed for another week as work continues on stabilising the site.
The road was shut at the end of last week because of concerns for public safety after a number of landslips at the site.
The owners of the affected land have now appointed engineering consultants Rexon Day to deal with the problem and make the area safe.
Colin Richardson from the firm said they were still waiting to clear the debris so they could look at exactly what work would need to be done.
He said they would know more after a meeting tomorrow morning, but at this stage the closure was likely to continue for "the best part of the week".
Bath and North East Somerset Council has said its concern is public safety and it will not reopen the road until it is satisfied that the land does not pose a risk to residents or people passing through.
In an update last night a spokesman said: "The council is awaiting notification from the landowner's representatives that the necessary investigations have been carried out.
"These will determine the nature of stabilisation works needed to make the landslip safe.
"We understand that the landowner's representatives are waiting for Western Power to divert a power cable to accommodate the investigation works.
"The council's priority is to ensure that anyone who uses the road can do so safely – we will not re-open the road until this is proven to be the case."
The closure is causing problems for motorists who use the route as way in and out of Bath, with the knock-on impact being heavy traffic on alternative roads including the A36.
