People are being urged to give up alcohol this new year by taking part in the Dry January 2014 challenge. The campaign by Public Health England and Alcohol Concern is designed to help people start the new year with a healthier outlook. And the positive side effects also include losing a few pounds and saving some money after Christmas. The leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council Councillor Paul Crossley, the council's director of health Dr Bruce Laurence, chief executive of drug and alcohol support service DHI Rosie Philips and the council's cabinet member for wellbeing Simon Allen have all pledged to abstain from drinking for 31 days. Dr Laurence said a dry January was the perfect way to give your body a chance to recover after the festive period. He said: "Livers and brains are hard-working organs and by the end of the festive season they deserve a break from the torrents of mulled wine, beer and bottles of bubbly. "A month off the booze sets them up nicely for the year to come, and I find that exercising a bit of self-control now and then can be good for the spirit too." Ms Philips added: "Despite all we know about alcohol, we have such an odd response to messages around moderation, in a way we simply don't around cream cakes, chocolate and other such indulgences. It seems it's still socially unacceptable not to drink. "Hopefully this campaign will help to enhance our understanding of how hard it is for those with an addiction to abstain, as well as a reminder for the majority of us to keep our indulgences in check for the sake of our long term health." Mr Allen said people could use the opportunity to raise money for a good cause, such as Alcohol Concern, and raise awareness amongst friends and family about alcohol misuse. He said the council was encouraging everyone across B&NES to take up the challenge and improve their health.
