Gardeners in Bathampton will feel a sense of pride as they eat their Christmas dinner after growing and rearing most of the ingredients. Members of the Dry Arch Growers signed up to a Grow Your Own Christmas project in January. As part of this they reared pigs and turkeys, and grew vegetables for the perfect Christmas feast. The Dry Arch Growers are a Bathampton based community supported agricultural scheme, and have spent the last three years bringing a disused market garden back into use. This year they decided to extend their activities into animal rearing, and the Grow Your Own Christmas project was launched. Each member paid £100, and in return received cuts of pork, sausages, a turkey, vegetables and apple juice. Three pigs and 25 turkeys arrived, and the group ran a rota for feeding and caring for them. Jan Helps was involved in the project. She said: "It was a big learning curve for us all, and I got involved because I wanted to do something different. "We knew right from the start that we would be rearing animals to be eaten, so we didn't give them cute names or get too attached. "I am looking forward to Christmas dinner, after all the effort that has gone into it, I hope people savour it and think about where all the food has come from." Advice and support was provided by Mike Wright from PJ's Pigs at Green Park Market, together with training from Bath City Farm. Group secretary Phil Helps said: "This was a fascinating and rewarding experience which really brought home to us, albeit on a small scale, the challenges farmers face. "We will enjoy our Christmas dinners all the more this year knowing that we gave the animals the best conditions and welfare we possibly could." More information on the Grow Your Own Christmas project can be found on the Dry Arch Growers blog at www.dryarchgrowers.co.uk .
