Weston Tesco closure prompts new supermarket bus service

Shoppers hit by the temporary closure of Tesco in Weston are being offered transport to another supermarket. The Tesco in Weston High Street has been shut while expansion work takes place, meaning some customers have been left without anywhere to easily pick up their groceries. However, in the new year a 25-seater community bus will be running each Thursday to Morrisons in London Road. It will launch on Thursday, January 9. Councillor Malcolm Lees (Ind, Weston) has initiated the scheme and said he hoped it would prove useful. He said: "I have been contacted by many residents who are unable to drive, or do not like to drive through town, about how difficult they are finding it to do their shopping without a supermarket in the village. "I will be using some of my ward councillor initiative money to commission this bus, initially for a temporary period whilst our supermarket is closed. "If this service proves popular we will look at providing further services." The bus will start its route at Napier Road, taking in Falconer Road, Leighton Road, Lansdown Lane, High Street, Church Street, Crown Hill, Weston Park and Weston Road to Morrisons. The bus will start at collections at Napier Road at 10am and arrive at Morrisons at around 10.30am, where it will wait for around one hour before taking customers back to Weston. Tesco closed the supermarket in October for the refurbishment project and has said it should be opening again next spring.
