Nursery staff from Keynsham will be camping out tomorrow to support people left with nothing after the typhoon in the Philippines. Raquel Kneeves and Mary Llewellin from Snapdragons Nursery will be living in a tent for 24 hours to raise money for the victims as well as highlighting the plight of those left homeless by the disaster. Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on Friday November 8 and was one of the most intense tropical storms to ever hit. It killed more than £5,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands without homes. Those that survived need urgent help, including emergency shelter, food and clean water, and the Disasters Emergency Committee has launched an appeal to help. Raquel is orginally from the Philippines and wanted to do what she could to help. She said: "My mother was born in Tacloban which is one of the worst affected areas and it's really shocking to see the devastation there. "I am lucky that my family has not been directly affected, but it makes me so sad to see my people struggling to survive and rebuild their lives. "I just want to help." Raquel and Mary have built a shelter with tarpaulins and will be cooking on a wood burning stove. They cook a traditional Filipino meal of chicken and rice soup which the nursery children and staff will be able to share. The camp out will begin at 2pm and last for 24 hours and the nursery is asking for sponsorship from parents and staff. To support them email Mary at m-llewellin@snapdragonsnursery.com Staff and students at St Brendan's Sixth Form College raised more than £1,000 towards the Philippines Disaster Fund, and made a further collection of clothes, toiletries and food items. The college has many students from the Bristol Filippino community, and some have family members in the areas affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
