Funeral tribute to Bath Archers president Philip Simmons

The Bath Archers have paid tribute to their president Philip Simmons by forming an honour guard of 32 longbows at his funeral.

Mr Simmons died at the age of 74 on July 21 after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born in Bath and lived in Larkhall, with his wife Stella, who he married in 1962.

His trade was carpentry and he taught the skill to people with mental illnesses.

He had been a member of Bath Archers since 1973 and was involved with promoting the sport, fundraising for the club and maintaining the facilities.

He was a capable field and target archer and was well-known for creating imaginative targets, including snakes, polar bears and even a multi-coloured T-rex.

In 1997 he was elected president, before being voted a life member in 1999 for services rendered.

Further recognition came in 2011 when he was presented with the Archery GB Unsung Hero Award for his work with the disabled.

Mr Simmons leaves behind his wife Stella, two daughters and grandchildren.

Bath Archers said his sense of humour and wealth of knowledge would be sorely missed.
