'Vulnerable struggle to get on board bus'

An appeal has been made for more modern buses to be introduced on routes around the city. The call has been made after a fleet of dated vehicles, which did not have low floor access, were used on service number five.

The service links Twerton with Bath Bus Station and is used by many older people.

However, according to councillor Tim Ball (Lib Dem, Twerton) the vehicles currently being used on the service are not accessible for older or disabled people because unlike modern buses used by First on other routes they cannot be lowered to kerb level and have steps.

Mr Ball said: "I'm not happy about the really old buses running along the number five route in Twerton. They are buses with steps on them and buses with no low floor.

"I was on the county council in 1994 and we supplied a whole fleet of low floor buses. Some of the old people can't get on, there are wheelchair users who can't get on."

Mr Ball has written to First requesting buses that have this week been replaced on the X39 route to Bristol should be redeployed in Twerton.

A spokesman for First said: "We are aware of Councillor Ball's concerns regarding service five and we are actively looking at this. We are unable to put the older X39 vehicles on to this route though as they are too big to navigate parts of it, however we are looking at which other vehicles can be moved to provide those people using service five with low floor, easier access buses."
