Bath Abbey memorial stones roll back years

Volunteers have recorded more than 100 memorial stones which have exposed for the first time by work at Bath Abbey.

The ledger stones on the church's floor are visible for the first time in 140 years after the temporary removal of section of pews.

The Churches Conservation Trust and abbey staff have joined forces with volunteers from the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies to document the flat stone memorials. It is the first stage of the church's Footprint Project to refurbish the building and repair the floor, with the installation of underfloor heating.

More than 30 people have been involved in the recording project and the stones have now been removed and are being stored.

Dr Neil Rushton, conservation project manager at CCT, said: "This will give us insight into communities that lived around the abbey."
