Call for tough action over lorries ignoring weight restrictions in Oldfield Park

People living in Oldfield Park are asking police to take tougher action against lorry drivers who ignore weight restrictions.

The latest call comes after another lorry became stuck trying to negotiate Brook Road despite the road having a 7.5-tonne weight limit.

Brook Road has been deliberately narrowed and signs have been put up warning drivers that the road is not suitable for heavy goods vehicles.

However, lorry drivers are ignoring the signs and then causing traffic chaos in the residential area as they try to reverse.

In June a lorry became stuck on the road and officers from Bath police station were called to help control traffic but chose not to reprimand the lorry driver.

Councillor June Player (Ind, Westmoreland) said it was not good enough and the police needed to take firm action.

She said: "We were hopping mad to be honest, because that was a really good opportunity to try to really highlight the situation.

"I've spent the last year campaigning and we finally got the build out and big signs put up to restrict lorries.

"I worked with the council on that and I think it has had a bit of an impact but I still get people phoning up saying there's a lorry stuck."

Community beat manager for the area, PC Adrian Secker, said Bath police were monitoring the situation and two drivers had recently been spoken to by officers.

He said: "I fully understand the frustration of local people with the problems. I have been working closely with the ward councillor June Player and we are treating this as a community priority.

"There is adequate signage and the responsibility lies with the lorry driver to conform to those requirements.

"It is possible that drivers have been diverted along the road by satellite navigation systems.

"But they should still pay attention to roadside signs."
