Cyclists using the new Two Tunnels route in Bath will be able to make music as they pedal thanks to an innovative new art project.

Passage, which is a sound and light installation, was commissioned by the cycling charity Sustrans and has been unveiled in the Combe Down tunnel, once part of the Somerset and Dorset Railway.

It is inspired by the idea of the historic railway and the steam trains' light reflectors, and is made up of a series of sensors. As people cycle past they will trigger the sensors, setting off lights and the sound of 16 composed viola and cello scores.

Sustrans chief executive Malcolm Shepherd said he was impressed by the finished result.

He said: "This is the first time Sustrans has commissioned an artwork using the latest technology and the result is a wonderful artwork in an extraordinary public space."

Passage will add to the Sustrans art collection, Art & the Travelling Landscape across the UK.

Mr Shepherd added: "It will establish the Two Tunnels Greenway as a memorable cultural attraction, in keeping with our commitment to work with artists whenever possible to create special places for everyone to enjoy."

Sustrans art producer Katy Hallett said she was hopeful that the people of Bath would enjoy the unusual installation and that it would attract even more cyclists to use the Two Tunnels.

She said: "Passage is an exciting interactive work by internationally-renowned lighting artists. We hope the work will attract even more people to come and experience this wonderful space and walk or cycle the route and the beautiful landscape around Bath."
