The Bath cafe where customers pay to enjoy coffee and stroke a cat

Bath may already be brimming with cafes but a new business venture by a mother and daughter could help to cater for the city's cat lovers.

Catherine and Claire Coulthard are hoping to attract £100,000 worth of investment to open Bath's very first cat cafe to be called Minerva's Moggies Cat Cafe.

The cafe will be home to up to 20 moggies, from local rescue centres, and members of the public will pay a £5 entrance fee to be able to sit and enjoy a coffee, read a newspaper or book and stroke a cat.

They hope to raise the £100,000 through crowd funding website Indiegogo and are offering people who invest a variety of incentives such as a chance to name the cats.

The pair, who are moving to the city to launch the new business, insist the idea is workable despite the unusual entrance charge move.

Claire, 23, who is moving from London, said: "My mum and I absolutely adore cats and had them all of our lives.

"I can't remember not having a cat in the house.

"We've always had rescue cats and we really thought it's a shame that when you go to a shelter there are so many animals."

She added: "We found out Romans brought cats to the UK and considering Bath is known for its historical links to the Romans we thought what better place to pay homage to the Romans and cats."

The duo have set themselves a deadline of September 9 to raise the cash and hope to open the cafe by next summer.

They are currently studying towards a City and Guilds qualification in pet store management to run the business.
