New caps on charges

The cost of using a mobile phone abroad has long been a controversial topic.

But last month the EU introduced new caps on charges within Europe, meaning holidaymakers were less likely to get caught out with huge phone bills.

The new prices mean sending a text message will only cost 7p, making a phone call will only cost 20p a minute and receiving a phone call will only cost 6p a minute.

The cost of browsing the internet will also be capped at 38p a megabyte, which generally allows you to look at around ten "made for mobile" web pages.

However, this capping does not apply to charges outside the EU.

Orange's charges for using your mobile phone in America are £1.10 a minute to make phone calls and £8 per megabyte for browsing the internet.

The firm's advice for keeping your costs down include buying a travel bundle to save money on calls, texts and browsing, taking advantage of free wi-fi where possible and knowing how to switch off the data roaming on your phone.

Industry regulator Ofcom has published a guide to using your mobile phone abroad, which warns of the high charges customers can face, especially when accessing the internet.

To read its advice, go to "Using your mobile abroad – check your phone before you roam" in the consumer section of www.ofcom.org.uk.
