Building nears completion

Building work is almost complete on a new budget hotel due to open this autumn.

Work on the £11 million Premier Inn hotel at James Street West started last July. When it opens in November it will create 50 new jobs.

The hotel, which replaces an old carpet warehouse, will provide 108-bedrooms and include the Thyme restaurant on the ground floor for guests and non-guests.

Just a stone's throw away from that spot is the £16 million Gainsborough Hotel.

The new luxury spa hotel at Lower Borough Walls is due to open early next year. The five-star development will have 99 bedrooms plus spa facilities, a restaurant, bar and rooms for private events.

The build project is being led by Wessex Water's parent company YTL and will create the country's first natural thermal water hotel spa.

The new venue is expected to create more than 200 jobs when it opens.

Later this month an announcement is expected to be made on who will operate a new 177-bedroom hotel at Kingsmead House, also on James Street West.

There is planning permission to demolish the eight-storey 1960s building and replace it with a hotel, restaurant and cafe.
