BATH RACECOURSE: Why we've had to close the grandstand at Lansdown

General manager Katie Stephens explains why it is all change at Bath Racecourse... This week, we announced the closure of the grandstand at Lansdown, meaning the rest of this year's racing season will take place in just one enclosure. Luxury marquees and a range of temporary catering options will replace the Grandstand's facilities, which have been forced to close after a heavy battering from the elements over winter. Fortunately it means that all customers will now have access to the public facilities on course, including the Premier Bar and Champagne Lawn. A big screen will also be in position opposite the Parade Ring for all feature meetings. A long-term replacement will be decided on this summer, so customers can look forward to a new-look enclosure for next year's racing season. Talking of facilities, we are encouraging local businesses to step out of the office this season and take meetings or conferences to the trackside. Day-long meeting room hire, including treats such as cream teas, chef-prepared lunch buffets, light and fruity breakfast on arrival, an event co-ordinator and regular caffeine boosts, is now available. Beats sitting in a cubicle waiting for the weekend – that is unless your weekend involves a trip to Bath's Real Ale Festival racenight on Friday, May 31. The racecourse's flea market was voted among the country's top ten by The Independent's Will Coldwell earlier this spring. "You'll quickly find yourself knee deep in more vintage and antique gear than you can imagine," he wrote, and that is certainly set to be the case on June 2 when the first flea market of the year takes place. Coldwell also reminded bargain-hunters to take a cream tea break as they burrow for clothes, jewellery, knick-knacks and treasures, and we second his recommendation! Hot on the heels of the flea market comes the course's annual Super Saturday summer race afternoon – one of the biggest, busiest and most atmospheric fixtures of the year. Here's hoping the sun will shine as guests enjoy music from an Irish jig band and seven exciting flat races during the afternoon. For more information, visit www.bath-racecourse.co.uk.
