Furious scrum-half Peter Stringer said he was spat at in the face as Bath Rugby were knocked out of the Amlin Challenge up by Stade Francais.
And television replays of the incident seem to show Jerome Fillol spitting straight into the face of Stringer following a first-half clash between the pair.
The 25th minute incident at The Rec was missed by referee Nigel Owens and his assistants but Stade Francais scrum-half Fillol could now face action by the rugby authorities and could face a lengthy ban.
Speaking after the game, won by the French club 36-20, an angry Stringer said: "Obviously it is a bit raw at the moment, but it happened on the pitch and there is no place in the game for it.
"That's as low as you can probably go. When you are on the end of something like that you are rattled by it, but try not to dwell on it. It's out of my hands now."
Stringer and Fillol had already exchanged words before they clashed again.
TV replays showed a verbal exchange between the two before former Ireland international Stringer reeled away, angrily claiming he had been spat at.
Brett Gosper, the chief executive of the International Rugby Board, tweeted: "Spitting on Stringer should be punished to the full extent of the law. #NotRugby."
