Police have now lifted a cordon at Batheaston after the discovery of what was thought to be an unexploded Second World War device in a garden.
The emergency services were called at around 1.15pm this afternoon when a member of the public dug up what appears to be a mortar shell.
A cordon was put up in Morris Lane, around the junction with Meadow Park, and officers spent some time in the area speaking to residents about the situation.
An army bomb disposal team called to deal with the device has now taken it away.
People were warned they may need to evacuate their homes but none needed to do so.
A number of ambulances were put on stand-by on the bypass.
