Dozens more roads in the Newbridge, Weston and Lansdown areas of Bath are about to become 20mph zones.
A £500,000 council programme to reduce vehicle speeds across the Bath area is about to target the west of the city.
Although Upper Bristol Road, Newbridge Hill, and Newbridge Road will remain subject to a 30mph ceiling, virtually all the roads in between will see new 20mph signs going up.
Among the streets affected will be Weston Lane, Julian Road, Combe Park and Locksbrook Road.
Bath and North East Somerset Council wants as much of the district to be covered by the lower limit as possible in an attempt to reduce accidents and encourage cycling and walking.
It has already implemented such a zone in Southdown and Twerton, and says similar regimes in Bristol have proved successful.
A report which has to be approved by cabinet member for transport Councillor Roger Symonds says: "The trials carried out in Bristol have shown that a 20mph speed limit on residential roads is beneficial to the community. This council believes that B&NES residents, particularly the vulnerable non-motor users, would also benefit from the lower speed limit."
More than 2,000 people responded to a consultation exercise in Newbridge, Weston and Lansdown, with 54 per cent of them in favour of the new speed limit, and 39 per cent against.
The proposals were then formally advertised earlier this year, with a number of objections being lodged.
Among the complaints were that the scheme was a waste of money because average traffic speeds were already below 20mph, and that the signs would be an eyesore.
But Mr Symonds is being urged to put these concerns to one side and agree that the new limits can be implemented.
The report says: "Introduction of a 20mph speed limit is recommended as it will improve the environment, and it should encourage more walking and cycling."
There will be no traffic calming measures.
