Hayesfield head Erica Draisey appointed to elite band of school leaders

The headteacher of a Bath secondary school has been selected for an elite band of leaders who support schools facing difficulties. Hayesfield head Erica Draisey is among 125 headteachers to be appointed to the role of National Leader of Education (NLE) in a new recruitment round. She will now be invited to the National College for School Leadership's learning and conference centre in Nottingham for a formal induction and training scheme. NLEs use their success and professionalism as school leaders, along with their own staff, to provide extra leadership capability in struggling schools or those moving to federation or academy status. The type of support provided is flexible and can involve NLEs becoming acting or executive headteacher of another school. Ms Draisey said: "We are delighted to be selected. This is in recognition of the role Hayesfield School has taken in developing partnerships in education and the business community and shaping the future of education for young people in Bath and its neighbouring villages." There are now more than 800 NLEs across the country and the number is set to rise to about 1,000 by 2014. Maggie Farrar, executive director at the national college, said: "It's great that heads like Erica are willing to look beyond their own school gates to help more pupils achieve. They should also be proud of their role because this scheme is at heart of our efforts to create a self-improving, school-led education system. "School-to-school support is having a growing impact and the results speak for themselves with benefits for both the schools and academies being supported and those providing the support."
