Tributes have been paid to a former Bath schoolgirl who died in a mountaineering accident in Scotland. Flight Lieutenant Fran Capps, 32, was one of three people killed in an avalanche in the Cairngorms last month. She was a pupil at what was then the Royal School, before it became the Royal High School, and had joined the Royal Air Force in 2001 as a logistics officer. She had served on operational tours in Iraq, the Falkland Islands, Afghanistan and Qatar. Flt Lt Capps was living in Exmoor at the time of her death, but was originally from Dulverton, in Somerset. Royal High School head teacher Rebecca Dougall said the news had saddened the school community. She said: "The Royal High School Bath was incredibly sad to learn of the tragic death of Flt Lt Frances Capps. "Frances attended The Royal School from 1990 to 1998, as her mother did before her, and we have been in touch with friends of Frances who have shared their fond memories of a wonderful young woman and happy school days. "Our thoughts are with her family at this very sad time." Others who knew Flt Lt Capps have paid tribute to her professionalism, spirit and energy. Group Captain Dominic Toriati, the Station Commander at RAF Odiham, said: "Flight Lieutenant Fran Capps was an exceptionally dedicated Royal Air Force Officer and logistician who was well known throughout the service for her remarkable commitment, her joie de vivre and her utter professionalism. "Fran achieved success wherever she served, most recently receiving a Chief of Joint Operations Commendation for her professional excellence, confidence and 'can-do' approach in Al Udeid. From Basrah to Kandahar to the Falkland Islands, Fran's boundless spirit and energy has shone through." Wing Commander Ian Richardson, chairman of the RAF Mountaineering Association, added: "Fran was always smiling, always enthusiastic, always welcoming and always willing to get involved and share her love of the hills with everyone in the association and beyond. She will be sorely missed." The accident in the Scottish Highlands happened on February 14 and also killed two others, 18-year-old Cornish student William Currie and Squadron Leader Rimon Than, 33, of RAF Valley in North Wales.
