The days of the Destructor Bridge across the River Avon are now numbered.
An 18-month project to replace the one-way road bridge with a new two-way structure will begin next week.
The road over the bridge will close next Monday to pave the way for the work.
The new bridge will have cycling and pedestrian routes across it.
Traffic will be diverted along the parallel Windsor Bridge Road while the work is carried out.
The 1870s Destructor Bridge was constructed as part of the old Green Park Station.
When it became surplus to requirements at the start of the 20th century, it was relocated to Midland Road.
It was given its new name because of its proximity to the city's incinerator.
The £2 million cost of the new bridge has come from a pot of £13 million given to the city by the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership. The rest of the money will go towards the dismantling of the final gas holder, a flood compensation solution for the city and the building of a new footbridge.
