Ok, so maybe I'm biased. But if you ask me, the sense of freedom and adventure that goes hand in hand with backpacking is pretty much unparalleled. With this in mind, I decided to list some of my favourite European cities for backpacking. Munich
My first recommendation is Munich. Why? Partly because of the world-famous annual 'Oktoberfest', which is THE place to go for all-day fun and partying. For the culturally minded, the city has churches, palaces and museums, but let's be honest, if you go in late September there's a good chance you won't remember much about the history or architecture. Prague
When it comes to cities of beauty, there aren't many that match the gothic splendour of Prague. This amazing town has become a favourite among travellers for its cobbled streets and atmospheric buildings. I visited in winter when its Vltava (pronounced Viltava) River was almost completely frozen over. With the Prague Castle acting as a backdrop, it was a truly incredible icy view.Barcelona
I just had to put Barcelona on the list. It is, of course, home to the Sagrada Familia - the oddly beautiful testament to Gaudi's legacy that divides opinion but is definitely a 'must see'. Me? I love it! Barcelona is a great backpacking destination if you like food, warm people and, importantly, nightlife that only really begins in the early hours of the morning...
All the places I've mentioned offer plenty of choice in accommodation so, like me, you shouldn't experience too much of a problem finding somewhere decent that fits your budget, even if you leave it to the last minute as I tend to do.
You might also want to consider this site for backpacker travel insurance. There are loads of providers, and the extra protection can prove helpful in the long run, especially if you're planning on taking in some of the most adventurous locations.
