Roger Randall carded the best score of the day to beat a defiant Bernard Roots in the seniors' Plate preliminary round. Randall's run of pars on the front nine put him two up after nine holes and although Roots was at his best coming back, he held on to confirm victory with a five-under-nett-par total on the final hole. Craig Jones provided the surprise result of the day by defeating League Cup group leader George Thurston and taking his place at the top. Thurston gained an early two-hole lead but Jones edged ahead at the turn and won two of the last four holes to make sure of the points. John Sercombe picked up his first points in the Secretary's Cup with a win over Brian Lambern. He took three holes without reply coming back after the contest was all-square at the turn. John Grubb secured his first Group D victory as he got the better of Tony Damon, winning on the 15th after a dominant front-nine display. Mike Fear came from two holes down early on to snatch a hard-earned draw with Colin Lee in Division 1. Lee edged into the lead again with two to play but Fear took the next to restore parity. Defending champion Brian Wickham took advantage of Bob McGregor's difficulties on the front nine, winning six of them to lead by five at the turn. He swiftly wrapped up the victory before McGregor hit form, winning the last six holes to no avail. Malcolm French closed the gap on leader Terry Selway to two points by beating Richard Randall. French opened up a four-hole lead on the back nine and won with two to play after his opponent rallied to take the 14th and 15th. Colin Gamlin claimed his first win of the season after a close encounter with Reg Morris, who missed out on the chance to go top. Morris cancelled out Gamlin's three-hole lead with two remaining but was beaten on the 17th. Sue Norris moved clear of the relegation places with a fine win over table-topper Selway. Norris was the steadier of the two over the front nine to lead by two at the turn and held her nerve after Selway drew level, securing the match with a half at the penultimate hole. Brian Woodford gained two valuable points at the expense of Ingrid Doherty in Division 2, rounding off his win by taking four of the last five holes. Leader Dennis Crombie was brought down by a lively Tiger Lewis, who led at the turn and then won each of the final three holes.
