On a normal Saturday hundreds, if not more than a thousand tourists pass through Bath Abbey's doors and marvel at the architecture of the historic building.

On October 18 though it was hard to negotiate through the grand church as tourists, and Bath residents, ascended into the abbey as it held a cake sale to raise money for major redevelopment work.

More than 25 cake sellers were set up inside the building for the Great Bath Bake Sale.

The abbey has been overwhelmed by the response from people who baked, ran stalls inside the building, and by the amount of people who went along and brought the cakes.

It needs to raise £7m in order to unlock a further £10m which will be provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund for its Footprint project - a redevelopment programme to repair and stabilise the abbey's floor.

The abbey hopes to have an eco-friendly underfloor heating system using Bath's hot springs as a source of energy, as well as create 200 square metres of additional space and improve its facilities.

Money raised from the day will also go towards the two charities, FoodCycle and FareShare, whose work ensures people in communities don't go hungry.

Footprint Appeal Director, Laura Brown, said: "We said it would run from 1pm until 4pm, but when we were putting the cakes out before, people were gathering in and wanted to buy them before which was great.

"This is the first big fundraising event for the development project. Footprint will fix our uneven and collapsing floor as well as provide more like toilets and a kitchen.

"We really wanted to do something people could get involved with to support the city with it being the Great Bath Feast.

"Hopefully we'll be able to do things like this a lot more as we'll have more of a support system and more space. We will have other events coming up so listen out."

Tour guide, Holly from Fairfield Park, came up with the idea of a gingerbread version of the abbey which was baked by her colleague Anna Wood, 19, from Swainswick.

Holly said:"I thought it would be a wonderful idea for us to do. We were excited about the cake sale and as tour guides, we wanted to something related to the tower which is where the idea came from.

"We hope to do this kind of thing again as it has been so successful."

The vicar, Claire Robson, addressed the crowd to thank people for attending, and said the abbey had been better than it had ever been before.

"It has been the most wonderful day and we have been full of people having a great day.

"Some people have come today who live in Bath but have never visited before. All that has gone on today will help some fantastic projects.

"For a Saturday in October, we have seen so many more people than we would hope to welcome and we are pleased about that."
