Flanker Carl Fearns says Bath Rugby will not be getting carried away despite their flying start to the new Aviva Premiership season.

A 53-26 success at home to newly-promoted London Welsh on Saturday saw Bath make it back-to-back wins following last weekend's victory away at Sale Sharks.

Mike Ford'e men second in the table, level on nine points with leaders Saracens and third-placed Leicester Tigers, who Bath entertain on Saturday.

A record crowd of 12,755 were treated to an 11-try thriller at The Rec last weekend but Fearns says the fact that Welsh claimed four of the scores means Bath still have plenty to work on.

"It's been a good start, especially going away to Sale with our record against them last season. We were fuming about that and felt that we owed them one," said Fearns.

"We're pleased with the away win and pleased to come back home and score 53 points in front of a record crowd.

"But the boys are a bit negative because we conceded so many points at home. We felt that defensively we could have put a lot more pressure on them and a couple of times we let them get through tackles and get offloads away.

"We're putting the pressure on ourselves and we know that these fine margins are crucial.

"Last season we missed out on the top four by a point so have looked hard within ourselves to find that little bit extra to get us where we want to be."

Fearns produced another of his trademark destructive carrying displays at The Rec, running the Welsh defence ragged from the first minute to the last.

His blistering break up the right-hand side led to scrum-half Chris Cook's opening try in the second minute, before Fearns completed the rout himself when he barged over the whitewash late on.

Winger Semesa Rokoduguni and centre Jonathan Joseph claimed two touchdowns apiece for Bath, while number eight Leroy Houston also dotted down.

"It was a nice start to the game and as a carrier I'm looking to get in those wider channels," said 25-year-old Fearns.

"I think last season a lot of my carriers were in traffic in midfield and it's a lot harder to do it there. If you get in the wider channels running at backs it's a bit easier.

"It's something I've been working on in training, getting into a better position out wide.

"We created a lot of chances because the boys were running hard.

"A couple of times we were guilty of trying to do things before the line rather than earning the right to play, but once we started to keep hold of the ball we looked dangerous."
