Two people had a lucky escape from a house fire in Combe Down last night despite the fact that their smoke detectors were not working.
Crews were called out to a property in Combe Road at around 9.20pm and when they arrived they found the occupants, a man and a woman, were already waiting outside.
There was a fire in the kitchen, which had started accidentally and was due to a fault with the dishwasher.
Firefighters used hoses to extinguish the flames and then a fan to clear the smoke.
They then discovered that the houses smoke alarms were faulty, so fitted two new ones and carried out a safety inspection of the house free of charge.
