It's a bit of a dry week this week and by that I mean nothing wants to go head to head with Marvel Studio's latest effort, Guardians of the Galaxy. Which is a perfect place to start as it's likely to be one of the highest grossing outputs from the studio which is really saying something.
Yes the latest in a series of victory laps for Marvel has landed at theatres everywhere and, having seen it, I have to say the hype is well deserved. It's the first Marvel release not to include any of its main three characters that have proved to be so profitable in the past. Guardians of the Galaxy introduces a whole new team of heroes to expand the Marvel universe into space with a brand new cast of villains. It provides plenty of action for the kids and there are more jokes than the best comedies of recent years that'll make it a lot of fun for the adults as well. If you see nothing else this week, see this and make sure to stay for the after credits sequence for a final big laugh.
Of course if hilarious space battles aren't your thing then there's a last chance to see Mark Ruffalo's movie, Begin Again.English singer-songwriter Greta (Keira Knightley) moves to Manhattan with her rock star boyfriend, but he leaves her soon after. While performing a set in a bar, Greta catches the attention of a kindred soul: the miserable former music biz hot shot Dan (Ruffalo). Soon after, Dan and Greta team up to record her album. It's heartwarming enough and is the perfect date night movie if Guardians isn't for you.
Finally we have Step Up: All In. It's another dancing movie. That's not to discredit it or to say that dance movies are somehow less deserving of a mention, just that you'll know if you'll enjoy this before you see it. If you like dancing movies you'll like this. There's also last chances to see The Purge, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes or even Transformers if you're in the mood for a real challenge.
