England's netballers got their bid for Commonwealth Games gold back on track with a 41-35 defeat if South Africa at the SECC. Team Bath duo Stacey Francis and Serena Guthrie were part of the squad beaten 49-48 in a pulsating battle with old rivals Australia on Saturday but England recovered to take a grip on second spot in Pool B. The result leaves them on course for a place in the semi-finals, where they are set to face defending champions New Zealand. South Africa won the first quarter 9-8 before England turned the tide to lead 19-17 at half-time and then pulled away to win by six points.. Jo Harten contributed 20 in the win and ex-Team Bath shooter Rachel Dunn bagged 16. England's fourth match of the competition is against Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday. Head coach Anna Mayes said: "Winning ugly is absolutely fine when you have got a win under your belt. I think the girls showed real character and real grit after the Australia match. "They showed real strength of character and lot of people after the game were asking how we would get them back up but they get themselves up. "Some of them took themselves away to watch another sport, others stayed at home and chilled out." Goal keeper Geva Mentor – another former Team Bath player – added: "There were a few sore and tired bodies out there so it was really good to go out there and get the points and the win, even if it was an ugly win. "It was just about grinding it out. We needed to look after each other better and we didn't do that in the first half. "We turned over a lot of ball but we just weren't able to convert it and that came down to us being mentally and emotionally tired from the highs and lows of the Australia game." Goal attack Dunn said: "We knew South Africa would come out strongly. We knew that after Australia that we have to win every game to get the semi-finals so it was good to get the win on the board. "We knew we had to wipe the slate clean and we knew South Africa would be a massive battle and it was."
