Bath residents give mixed reactions to new Foxhill development plans of former MoD site

Residents in Bath have given their views on the latest development plans of a former MoD site at Foxhill.

Housing organisation Curo laid out the latest plans for the new housing estate which will see 700 new homes built on the land.

The public viewings took place at St Andrew's Community Church on July 11 and 12. It follows on from an initial public consultation which was held in April.

The plans were displayed around the hall with a model of the site for people to look at in the middle of the room.

Staff from Curo were also on hand to help people and explain more about the updated plans.

There was mixed feedback from people who feel the new information is not as clear as they would have liked.

Combe Down resident Richard Pool said: "The plans look alright. I have some concerns with regards to traffic and the fact that the roads surrounding it don't appear to have been improved at all. But it looks good and it is important to me that the houses are made as environmentally friendly as possible."

Dennis Davis, who lives on Bradford Road, believes the development will be a disruption to local residents.

"I think the main issue I have is the demolition that is going to be involved. It will be disrupting a lot of people's lives. Also people will be subjected to change which they tend not to like. I don't think the plans are detailed enough and that is a big concern to people living in the area at the moment."

Sedgemoor Road resident Sarah Garlington added: "I am still a bit confused by it at the moment as nothing is really set-in-stone. Things could change over the years as they go through with it so I am still none the wiser really."

For some, transport remains the biggest concern.

Susannah Maylew, who also lives Combe Down said she is glad that Curo has tried to listen to people after the last consultation.

"I get the impression they have tried to listen to people's concerns but the main issue is transport and it is going to be hard to deal with.

"A lot of it now rides on the council and First as to whether they can make these alternatives to the car work. I think in general it is a good thing to regenerate this site, but as I say, making the traffic situation work is not just Curo's problem now."

Communications manager Susan Fletcher explained some of the areas which have had more focus on since April which includes an improvement to the Bradford Road junction,  plans for more frequent bus services, more accommodation for the elderly, improving local shops, and more detail about green, open spaces.

Director of Asset Management Mike Grist said: "This is an evolution rather than a whole change. The road patterns have changed and we have listened to people's concerns. Mostly it is just shifting things around and tweaking the design."

The plans are due to be finalised throughout the summer following the weekend consultations, before a final reveal of the development in October.
