Oldfield Park Junior School celebrates year of playing outdoors

A Bath primary school which won a long-fought battle to get its own playing fields has marked the first anniversary of having the outdoor space.

Oldfield Park Juniors held a day of events to celebrate the fact that it has now been able to host its first sports day, home football matches and a play day at the site.

Pupils also planted more than 400 trees and shrubs to create a new hedge and have grown their own food in new raised beds.

The field has retained two mature fruit trees and the school is looking at more opportunities for food production and education around growing.

Bath and North East Somerset Council bought the land for the Lymore Terrace school last year, after a long campaign by the school community.

Head teacher Marilyn Cole said the playing fields had made a real difference.

She said: "This is a wonderful facility to have and we are looking at how we can link it into all that we do at the school.

"We have been very fortunate to have a committed team of parents and governors who, with the support from the council, worked tirelessly to see this project through from start to finish."

The celebration event last Friday was put on to thank everyone who had been involved with the sports field project, and took place at the end of a week of special activities themed around healthy eating.

B&NES Council's cabinet member for early years, children and youth, Councillor Dine Romero, said: "We purchased land at the back of Oldfield Park Junior School because it was the only school in our area without a playing field or any grassed areas that pupils could use for sports or play.

"I'm delighted to see how it has transformed the school."
