Thursday will be the first of nine days of industrial action being taken by Avon Fire and Rescue Service during July.

The fire service is striking after members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) voted for a strike over a dispute with the Government about pensions.

Its service will be reduced between 10am and 7pm throughout Thursday.

A service will operate from six strategic locations across the AF&RS area. Fire cover will be provided by firefighters who are not part of the FBU. They will work alongside auxiliary firefighters who have received training to provide basic support to fully qualified crews.

People living and working in the AF&RS area are being urged to check their fire safety measures ahead of the national strikes by firefighters.

The brigade have issued ten tips for people to bare in mind during the strikes:

  • Fit smoke detectors on every level of your home
  • Make an escape plan and practice it with all the family
  • Take extra care when cooking, particularly with hot oils
  • Dispose of cigarettes carefully and don't smoke in bed
  • Be careful when using candles and tea lights
  • Make sure matches and lighters are kept away from children
  • Do your bit to help vulnerable friends, family and neighbours
  • Reduce the risk of road traffic collisions
  • Business owners should check their premises are safe from fire
  • Get out, Stay out, Call 999.

There will be further strikes planned for: Monday 14 July to, and including, Friday 18 (6am-8am, 5pm-9pm), Saturday 19 (11am-1pm, 11pm-1am Sunday 20) and 6am-8am and 5pm-9pm for the remainder of Sunday.
