Motorists are being warned to avoid the B3110 as there are reports of chaos at the temporary traffic lights.
A number of people have taken to Twitter voicing their annoyance at the disruption as many people head home from work.
The traffic lights on Midford Road seem to have failed with reports of green lights in both directions, allowing traffic to almost collide.
Other reports have said the lights have got stuck while on red.
Ed Borton tweeted: "The traffic light system in Midford is beyond ridiculous. Been sat for seven minutes and the lights haven't changed."
Chairman of Hinton Charterhouse Parish Council Chris Clemence also tweeted: "BANES say Midford traffic problems will be addressed by manual marshall operation of the lights during peak periods."
The temporary traffic lights are in place while work is to be commenced following a land slip.
