Larkhall driver Neil Fender takes Triumph TR2 to respectable finish at Classic Le Mans event

A Bath-based racing driver fought off mechanical problems and horrendous weather conditions to bring his Triumph TR2 to a worthy placing at one of the world's most prestigious classic endurance races.

Larkhall's Neil Fender entered his 1955 car in the Classic Le Mans event at the French circuit, a 24-hour discipline split into a number of different sections.

Fender, who runs a classic car business in Bristol, was reuniting his machine with a circuit where it was a reserve for the Triumph work's team in 1955. It also competed on a number of other events, in its day, including the famous Tulip rally.

Having qualified the car 22nd against very strong opposition, the first of the weekend's three races ended with half shaft failure on the third lap.

Starting from the back of the grid for race two, the wet conditions allowed the relatively low-powered car to move up to 14th – a position it retained in the final race on Sunday morning, held in almost monsoon conditions.

"We are very happy indeed with that result, given the strength of the opposition," said Fender after a race which saw some the world's top historic racers and former Grand Prix drivers in attendance.
