Bath motor show raises money for Wizzybug

Classic cars were out in force in Bath for the Rotary Club's annual charity fundraiser.

The Bath Pageant of Motoring, now in its third year, put a wide range of classic cars on display to help raise money for Bath-based charity Designability.

Rotary Club member and chairman of the pageant committee Peter Edwards said: "Designabiity are a great charity to support. They're local, plus the Wizzybug and the focus on mobility marries up nicely with the motor theme. It's all about wheels."

Designability director Nigel Harris said: "The pageant has been tremendous for raising awareness of the benefits of Wizzybugs for small children, and has led onto other fundraising opportunities. The interest has grown tremendously.

"The loan scheme has been fantastic and had an overwhelming response. Kids are now able to get the Wizzybug much quicker which is great.

"The Rotary Club works hard all year to put on this event, and it's an amazing achievement."

As well as a large display of classic cars from modern supercars to a 1904 Renault, the event also has a wide range of stalls, raffles, entertainment and activities for all ages.

Mr Edwards added: "This year we've seen around 50% more exhibitors, interest is certainly growing and we hope to increase visitor numbers significantly this year.

"There is a real interest in classic cars in Bath, and this is the opportunity for people to come and view around 350 classic cars locally. There's nothing else like this in Bath.

"Some exhibitors come back year on year and say they enjoy it very much. We're a very friendly, accessible show and there's a great atmosphere."

Thanks to funding from organisations such as the Rotary Club, 131 families nationwide have benefitted from the Wizzybug loan scheme since 2011.

There is often no NHS funding for powered mobility aids for children under five which is why Designability, formerly known as the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering, offer the Wizzybug through a free loan scheme.

The simple controls mean children as young as 18 months with conditions like cerebral palsy, spina bifida and muscular dystrophy can have a fun experience of mobililty.

The pageant continues tomorrow (Sunday, July 6) at Walcot Rugby Club, Lansdown, from 10am until 4pm. Tickets are £10 per adult and £6 per child aged five to 16.
