Adam Connolly says it was time for a "new challenge" at Gloucester City after the midfielder's departure from Bath City was confirmed on Friday.
The 28-year-old, who was joint player of the year when City won promotion in 2009/10, has been at Twerton Park for six years but was not offered a new contract for 2014/15.
He has now become Tim Harris' seventh signing of the summer for Conference North side Gloucester, where he will be reunited with former City team-mates Lewis Hogg, Charlie Griffin and Scott Wilson.
"I had six really good years at Bath but it was time for a new challenge and once I spoke to Tim it was an easy decision to make," Connolly, who lives in Worcester, told the Gloucester Citizen.
"My game is about giving 100 per cent every week and hopefully I can add a bit of experience and know-how to the squad.
"I like to think I am a bit of an all-rounder in midfield. I try to get box-to-box as much as possible, get on the ball as well and work hard for the team.
"With the players that we've got here we should do well. Players like Lewis Hogg, Charlie Griffin and Scott Wilson have got good pedigree at this level."
Harris added: "Adam has got bags of experience playing at Conference and Conference South level and he will give us real competition for places in midfield."
Connolly, who signed from Hednesford Town in 2008, has been an integral part of City's midfield in recent years and scored 16 times in 274 appearances - his last goal coming on the final day of the 2013/14 season during a 2-0 win at Concord Rangers.
A statement on the City website said: "All at the club thank him for his time at Twerton Park and wish him the all the best at Gloucester."
