Wayne Rooney offered an apology to England supporters following his side's early World Cup exit.
England have nothing other than pride to play for against Costa Rica – who have already qualified from Group D – in their final game on Tuesday, having lost 2-1 to both Italy and Uruguay.
With one game still to play the exit is the earliest an England side has ever been eliminated from the tournament and the first time since 1958 that they have been knocked out in the group stages.
"We did some good things, were positive but we lost our two games. We need to look at it and works on things going forward," said Rooney.
"We have to learn from this, we need to be more clinical and take our chances.
"It's tough to take and it's the first time we have gone out of a tournament after two games.
"We appreciate efforts of the fans, we are sorry we didn't go through.
"We're hurting, disappointed to be out of the tournament but we have to pick ourselves up for Tuesday and restore some pride."
Results in Brazil have also inevitably brought the spotlight onto the future of manager Hodgson – although he has already been backed by Greg Dyke.
Rooney reinforced the FA chairman view, saying: "He's put enthusiasm in the team. There's no doubt Roy is the man to take us forward.
"We appreciate what he's done for us. He's changed the way we play over the last couple of years.
"You can see the progression. I feel we're getting better and this will help the younger players and help us become a better team."
