A heritage campaign group is opposing plans to build 240 homes on a former MoD site. The Bath Preservation Trust has lodged a formal objection to a planning application for the 21-acre Ensleigh site at Lansdown. Bloor Homes and Linden Homes have submitted plans to Bath and North East Somerset Council for 240 homes, plus a 60-bed care home and a convenience store. The development is expected to create 30 new jobs. Bath Preservation Trust said it welcomed the development but is concerned about the height and design of the properties and the impact they will have on the neighbouring Beckford's Tower, which it is sole trustee for. Its objection said: "The layout, design, height, appearance and materials fails to reinforce local distinctiveness and complement its surroundings and thus would substantially harm the special qualities of the City of Bath World Heritage Site, and substantially harm the significance and setting of Beckford's Tower." The plans have been developed by Bath architects Nash Partnership in collaboration with landscape architects Nicholas Pearson Associates and Bristol-based planning specialists GVA. A spokesman for the two house builders said Bloor Homes and Linden Homes were committed to delivering an appropriate scheme. He said: "The team has proactively engaged with a number of stakeholders from an early stage in the design process, including Bath Preservation Trust, local residents, as well as officers and elected members of Bath and North East Somerset Council. This comprehensive programme of community and stakeholder engagement, both prior to and following the submission of the planning application, has sought to address issues relating to heritage assets and ensure that the scheme responds positively to the aspirations of the local community and heritage-interest groups. "We believe that the scheme proposed balances the need to fulfil the potential of the site to help meet an identified local need for new homes while respecting views to and from Beckford Tower and the gateway to Lansdown Cemetery." Elsewhere, a planning application has been submitted to B&NES for the Warminster Road MoD site. A consortium made up of Square Bay (Bath), Firmstone Development and Edward Ware Homes wants to build 189 homes on the 17-acre site. Over at Foxhill Curo has revealed controversial plans to redevelop not only the 48-acre MoD site, but also its existing estate, to create a new community with 700 homes, a school, open spaces, shops and community facilities.
