The average house price in Bath is now more than eight times a city wage packet making it the most expensive place to buy a home in the South West.
Properties in Bath, which cost on average £241,262, are now 8.2 times the average wage in the city - estimated to be £29,364.
These figures have made Bath the most expensive city in the South West. On average a property in the region will cost £178,918 - seven times the average wage of £25,632.
The figures are part of a survey collated for the trade union GMB, which is now calling on the Government to intervene.
The survey used data from the Land Registry House Price Index and Office for National Statistics.
The GMB Congress, held in Nottingham, has agreed strategic policies for the housing market which it would want adopted by an incoming Labour Government.
The union is calling for all housing policy and resources to be run from one Whitehall department and for a long term plan to be initiated to focus on new build.
GMB General Secretary, Paul Kenny, said the country needed to build 250,000 new homes a year plus bring 30,000 empty homes back into use.
"An incoming Labour Government from 2015 will need to make affordable housing a central part of its economic and social strategy. Some of the strategic and institutional changes will take time to put into full effect but the intention needs to be clear from the start with an immediate emergency programme and legislative action from the first session of the new parliament."
