Warning to pet owners as cat dies of feline TB in Bath area

Pet owners in Bath have been warned to be vigilant after it was confirmed a cat from the area has died of feline TB. The cat was brought into the Bath Vet Group's Rosemary Lodge Hospital this week showing symptoms of the disease. Alex Gough, head of internal medicine at the hospital has warned owners to be vigilant. He said: "If your cat is sick, especially if it is showing new lumps, is coughing, or has breathing problems, we'd recommend you bring it to the vet " Tests are being carried out to identify the strain of the disease and, at this stage, it is not known if the cat died of the Mycobacterium Bovis strain which can spread to humans and other cats. The risk of the disease to humans is "very low but not negligible", according to the Human Animal Infections and Risk Surveillance group. Last month a woman in Surrey caught TB from her cat and Mr Gough said owners should look out for symptoms including skin nodules and lumps, coughing, breathing difficulties and swollen lymph nodes.
