A business next to the Pulteney Weir is bracing itself for disruption as more heavy rain is forecast over the weekend. The weir has disappeared under the effects of extra rainwater and Andrew Bell, who owns the Riverside cafe, said he had filled 19 sandbags as a precaution. He said: "I got a phone call from my staff this morning saying we had been put on immediate flood alert. "I think the river has risen two and a half foot today but we don't know what's coming tomorrow. We have the bags ready." Saluo Ciambrone from the nearby River Canteen said he was confident his business would be fine. He said: "People can come enjoy a romantic meal by the window and watch the river." Mark Powell, at The Bridge Cafe on Pulteney Bridge, said the weather was more of a worry than the rising river. He said: "The rain is having an adverse effect on business but the rising water has become a bit of a spectacle for the tourists. "It's certainly the highest I've seen it since we've had the shops which is going on for five years." Vivian Perry, from Pulteney Bridge Flowers, said she had seen the river rise much higher in the past and was not concerned about her business. A council spokesman said: "We are working with the Fire Service, the Police and the Environment Agency to minimise the impact of the rising water at Pulteney Weir. "We are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of the public and businesses, including closing off the footpath and car park, and liaising with Bath Rugby Club. "The Environment Agency have a number of options open to them for dealing with the rising water and we advise you to contact them directly for more information." The A431 Bath Road through Swineford will remain closed over the weekend. It was closed earlier today due to flooding.
