Mark Foster sculpture moved to a new home

The life-size sculpture of swimmer Mark Foster has been moved to a new home. A large crane was used to move the giant stone torso from SouthGate to the City of Bath College. The sculpture can now been seen outside the front of the building. The sculpture of the 6ft 6ins sportsman has been welcoming shoppers to the SouthGate centre since it was erected in May 2012. However the temporary planning permission for the sculpture by city artist Ben Dearnley has long since run out. Bath and North East Somerset council decided to move the the artwork, which cuts off Foster's head, leaving a jagged edge above his chin, to the City of Bath College. The college's stonemasonry students made the plinth for the sculpture, which was created as part of an 2012 Olympic arts legacy project. The college was chosen as the preferred location for the sculpture after consultants working for Bath and North East Somerset Council had looked at several possible city centre sites. The statue – showing the Olympic and Commonwealth games star rising from the water – has been placed in a prominent position in front of the Macaulay Building in James Street West. A ten-year loan agreement was signed between the two parties in May last year. The college will maintain the sculpture but any costs involved in its transportation and installation will have to be met by the council.
